Dr Rachel Hannam

PhD(OrgPsych) GradDipEd BSocSc (Hons) MAAPi

Principal Psychologist, North Brisbane Psychologists

Rachel has been a registered psychologist since 2002. For years, Rachel consulted with small and large organisations, working with doctors, nurses, teachers, forensic scientists, pilots, lawyers, middle managers and executives, gaining broad experience in facilitating and coaching individuals and groups. She is skilled at helping people cope with anxiety, stress and trauma, relationship conflict, and personal change. In 2006, she was awarded her PhD which focussed on emotional burnout and professional resilience.

Prior to being a psychologist, Rachel worked as a research assistant, a school teacher, and a weight-loss counsellor. She loves her work quite simply because she loves people. Helping individuals and couples feels like the best use of her talents. She is passionate about personal growth and reads avidly. She and her husband have four kids and one lazy cat!

Rachel helps you understand yourself and others in new ways and offers techniques that draw heavily upon acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), positive psychology, schema therapy, emotion-focussed couples therapy (EFCT), The Gottman Method, neuro-psychotherapy, and nonviolent communication (NVC).

Rachel’s helps you gain awareness of what triggers you, what drives you, and what holds you back. Rachel is relaxed and uses humour and questioning to help you to reclaim your power and take responsibility for your own life.

In addition to private practice, Rachel works with Brisbane Workplace Mediations where she helps people transform conflict into connection. Rachel has a podcast called Help Me! I’m a Comedian on ABC Radio which started in 2018. Learn more about Rachel in this 2017 interview she did for ABC Radio during National Psychology Week 2017 and in a humorous 2018 ABC Radio interview with comedian Sam Bowden on family conflicts. Check out an article Rachel wrote on Love vs. Low Self-Esteem for Provoke Magazine (p54) about challenging our beliefs in relationships. She was also recently featured in this article on ABC News, discussing regaining your confidence after workplace bullying or discrimination.
